What is eSATA?eSATA is an extension to Serial ATA standard to enable SATA drives to be attached externally. Before eSATA, external hard drives were connected via FireWire or USB. eSATA can provide data transfer rates significantly faster than FireWire or USB. The eSATA 1.5 standard offers data rates up to 150MBps. The eSATA 3G standard doubles that to 300MBps. The eSATA standards support data cables up to 2 meters in length. eSATA drives must be hot-pluggable. This means that you can attach or remove an eSATA hard drive from a computer system without powering down the computer or the drive.
